Irish Heart Foundation launch "The Fats of Life" campaign

The Irish Heart Foundation has just launched a special campaign for the month of September called "The Fats of Life" which is all about fat and cholesterol.

Different fats in the food we eat affect the lipids, or fats, in our blood - i.e. cholesterol. In turn having a healthy cholesterol is vital in preventing heart attack or stroke, still the leading cause of death in Ireland.

Fat is an important part of a healthy diet.

  1. All types of fat, both good and bad, are high in calories so you only need small amounts in your diet.
  2. Too many bad fats such as saturated fat in the diet can increase LDL "bad" cholesterol levels.
  3. Trans fat is an especially bad fat as it can increase LDL "bad" cholesterol and also decrease HDL "good" cholesterol.
  4. You don't need to cut out meat for a healthy cholesterol.
  5. You don't need to cut out dairy foods for a healthy cholesterol.
  6. An egg a day is ok.
  7. Not all fat is bad.
  8. Some types of fat are essential.
  9. Some good fats not only lower LDL "bad" cholesterol but can also help keep your heart healthy.
