PEI and St Jude Medical Showcase Cardiac Future with New Technology Evening

On Wednesday, 28th November, PEI and St. Jude Medical hosted their ‘Innovating for More Options’ meeting at the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (RCPI) on Kildare Street, Dublin.
 
The meeting brought together some of Ireland’s leading Cardiologists and Cardiothoracic Surgeons to discover how St. Jude Medical’s physician-inspired engineering, landmark clinical trials and transformative medical technology are advancing the practice of medicine.
 
Several new technologies were introduced at the meeting, including the Portico Transcatheter Aortic Heart Valve and Transfemoral Delivery System, which received CE mark approval in mid-November, and some other exciting new innovations still in development.
                   
The meeting was chaired by Mr John Hurley, Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon and Clinical Director of the Heart and Vascular Centre, Mater Private Hospital, and featured a selection of renowned international speakers, including:
 

  • Dr Aldo Rinaldi, Consultant Cardiologist, Guy’s and St. Thomas’ Foundation Trust, London, who spoke on “The Future of CRT: Multisite LV Pacing”

 

  • Mr Urban Lonn, Cardiac Surgeon and Medical Advisor - Cardiovascular and Ablation Technologies, St. Jude Medical US, who introduced St. Jude Medical’s next-generation pericardial tissue heart valve Trifecta™

 

  • Dr Ganesh Manoharan, Consultant Cardiologist at Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast, who introduced the St. Jude Medical Portico™ Transcatheter Aortic Valve Clinical Experience” (the results presented by Dr. Manoharan were part of a 10 patient feasibility study conducted at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast, Northern Ireland)

 
The expert faculty was further enhanced by the presence of Oliver O’Connor, a London-based Irish Healthcare Economist, whose presentation examined the Irish healthcare market, posing the question: Irish Health Costs - Unsustainable, Unaffordable, Unreformable?”
 
With its strong links to past advancement of healthcare in Ireland, the Dun Library at the RCPI provided the perfect setting for discussion surrounding current clinical practice and experiences and the possibilities of embracing future innovations.
