PEI Sponsors Fourth "Prevention of Sudden Cardiac Death Meeting (SCD) - Focus on Genetics"

PEI was delighted to have sponsored the 4th Prevention of Sudden Cardiac Death Meeting (SCD) - Focus on Genetics which took place on the 27th November 2010 at the Royal College of Physicians in Ireland.

The meeting was aimed at geneticists, cardiologists and cardiology SpRs, interested general physicians, senior CCU and cath laboratory staff. An internationally renowned faculty was assembled, which included including Michael Ackerman (Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota) and Sanjay Sharma (The London Heart Hospital, UK), as well as Joseph Galvin (Connolly and Mater Hospitals, Dublin), Pascal McKeown (Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast) and Andrew Greene (Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children, Dublin).

The first session, “Cardiac Genetics and SCD in Ireland: The current situation” was chaired by Dr. Siobhan Jennings, HSE. The second session, “Update on the Genetics of Channelopathy and Cardiomyopathy” was chaired by Dr. Gerry Fahy, Sth Infirmary and Cork Univ. Hospital. The third session, “Cardiac Genetics in Special situations” was chaired by Dr. Pat Nash, University College Hospital, Galway and the final session, “A National Cardiac Genetics Programme: Constructing a strategy for the future” was chaired by Dr. Paul Oslizlok, Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children, Dublin.

The meeting was preceded by an informal faculty dinner on Friday, 26th November. Please click here to view a selection of photos from the evening. The attendees were joined on the night by special guest, Prof. Conor Ward, author of the 1964 paper which discussed Long QT Syndrome and Arrythmias, later becoming known internationally as the "Romano-Ward Syndrome".
