How can hospitals prevent costly injuries due to slips, trips and falls?

SLIPS, TRIPS AND FALLS (STF) ARE ONE OF THE MOST COMMON CAUSES OF INJURIES AMONG NURSES. THE COMBINATION OF SLIPPERY SURFACES, OBSTRUCTIONS AND TIME PRESSURE OFTEN LEADS TO SERIOUS ACCIDENTS, WITH THE PERSON INVOLVED BEING ABSENT FROM THE WORKPLACE FOR OVER A MONTH. DID YOU KNOW ANSELL OFFERS SOLUTIONS TO HELP HOSPITALS PROTECT THEIR HEALTHCARE WORKERS AGAINST THESE RISKS?

Slips, trips and falls (STF) safety has become increasingly important to the healthcare industry. A study by US-based insurance company Zurich  showed that STF claims differ from all other types of accident claim. The greatest concern is the cost; not only in the size of the claims, but also in the time it takes to get employees back to work. Zurich calculated that the average cost per claim for STF is EUR 7,038 over a five-year period, i.e. 50% more expensive than all other accident types. Moreover, STF accidents also generate 10% more lost-time claims than other accident types, again leading to higher costs.

Where and how?

Though the figures above are based on an American study, we may assume the cost in Europe is similar. So how can healthcare organizations protect their staff from costly workplace injuries like sprains or strains, broken bones or back injuries? It’s important to first take the time to understand where and how STF risks could occur. In a next step, they can put into practice preventative measures.

Invest in prevention

According to the UK Health and Safety Executive, 54% of STF injuries in the healthcare sector are due to slippery and wet substances and surfaces (water, dry and dusty floor contamination, such as spills, lint or talcum powder, etc.) or to obstructions. Keeping the floor in good condition and preventing contamination (wet or greasy floors) will thus help prevent slips, trips and falls. Ansell SANDEL solutions will then help further reduce the risk.

Keep it dry and mark obstacles

With the Ansell SANDEL DriFloor™ Absorbent Pads, hospitals can easily collect fluids and keep the floor dry, to prevent slips and falls. SANDEL Trip-No-More™ is a bright orange, disposable cord cover designed to increase the visibility of cords and tubes on the floor, thus reducing the risk of trips and falls.
