PEI support MPH Time Out relaunch

PEI was delighted to support the Mater Private Hospital when it relaunched it's Time Out Policy for Theatre Safety in September 2016.

The Mater Private Theatre team re-launched their TIME OUT Policy on the 19-09-16 in partnership. Garie Tarrega presented findings on Never Event surgery in a bid to further inform all the theatre staff about the importance of TIME OUT in the prevention of Never Events.

The key points presented on the day were around the history and relevance of TIME OUT and Garie explained that JCI released the UNIVERSAL PROTOCOL for Preventing Wrong Site, Wrong Person, Wrong Procedure Surgery in July 2003. Though this has been long established, “In the US, Wrong Site Surgeries occur an estimated 40 times a week (or 5 times a day). (JCI) “(According to AORN Magazine May 2016).

There are Three Essential Processes found in the universal protocol

a.     MARKING  THE SURGICAL SITE
b.     PRE-OPERATIVE VERIFICATION PROCESS
c.     TIME OUT THAT IS HELD IMMEDIATELY BEFORE THE START OF A PROCEDURE

There are procedures in place to make sure that all of these steps are carried out.
