Arthritis Myth: Arthritis is a condition that just affects the elderly

Arthritis Ireland the patient support group for arthtritis sufferers in Ireland recently published an interesting article about common misconceptions about the condition. One of the most common misconceptions about arthritis is that it just affects the elderly. In reality arthritis can affect anyone at any age, not just the elderly including:

  •     Children
  •     Young adults
  •     Middle-aged people

Specifically, juvenile arthritis (JA) affects more than 1,000 children in Ireland, while the average age of diagnosis for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is just 35. Around half of adults with RA are of working age, three quarters of which are diagnosed when of working age.

Arthritis Ireland provides lots of information on arthritis drugs and medication, but also on non-medical interventions, like our internationally-acclaimed 'Living Well with Arthritis' self management programme, the National Helpline, a nationwide network of branches and arthritis exercise supports, like the walking group network.
