Paediatric ACL repair “first” in Ireland

One of the first paediatric Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) procedures of its kind was performed recently using an Orthopediatrics system supplied by PEI. The procedure, an ACL reconstruction, was carried out at Our Lady's Children's HospitalCrumlin by Mr Pat Kiely, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon.
Traditionally procedures of this kind have been incredibly difficult to perform as the risk to damaging growth plates of the shin and thigh bone is very high as these are still developing. If these get damaged the child may end up with one limb shorter than the other, or another similar deformity.
This system from Orthopediatrics allows surgeons to repair the ACL without damaging the growth plates. It is a totally unique option for surgeons treating patients under 16 years of age.
OrthoPediatrics system featuring The OrthoPediatrics ACL Reconstruction System, which features ShieldLoc™ and ArmorLink™. is the first and only system designed with the developing patient in mind, comprised of a single system with innovative, safe instruments and implants.
With the partnership of leading Paediatric Orthopaedic Sports Medicine surgeons and based on core principles of ACL reconstruction techniques, OrthoPediatrics has developed an unparalleled system that provides a safe alternative to conventional ACL reconstruction options in the developing patient.
A video of the technique is available to view on the Orthopediatrics web site - Click here.
