The PediNail™ Paediatric Femoral Nail system offers a number of solutions to problems surgeons have faced in the past in attempting to utilise a rigid intramedullary nail for fracture fixation in children.
Recently, the technique of reamed nailing through a lateral greater trochanteric insertion point, which avoids the piriformis fossa and potential damage to the femoral head blood supply, has grown in popularity. However, until the launch of PediNail™ Paediatric Femoral Nail, orthopaedic surgeons have been forced to use off-label adult straight nails. These adult nails force surgeons to compromise technique, anatomic fit, function and fixation, ultimately risking injury to the patient.
PediNail™ Paediatric Femoral Nail is anatomically designed with a proximal and distal bend to facilitate insertion in the tip of the lateral greater trochanter, avoiding a medial wall fracture in the proximal segment, and the potential for varus malalignment. The anatomic bow provides a fit for the paediatric patient not found with adult implants. With the immediate stability afforded by proximal and distal locking screws, a large nail with tight intramedullary fit is not required.
PediNail™ Paediatric Femoral Nail ranges in size from 7- 9 mm distally and no greater than 9 mm proximally, minimising the size of the entry hole, as well as the amount of medullary reaming required for the nail to pass through the diaphysis.
