PEI’s Niall Gannon takes bronze in European Championships

Niall Gannon, PEI’s Accountant put aside his calculator for a few days recently to take part in the European Seniors Badminton Championships. The Championships took place in the ultra new Oriel Park Sports Development Centre, Dundalk between Monday the 27th of September and Saturday 2nd of October.

The event, one of the highlights of Badminton Ireland’s busy calendar, was a massive competition, attracting 592 players from over 24 different European countries, with players ranging in age from 35 – 70. 

Niall, who appeared in the “Over 35’s Doubles” competition made it through to the semi-finals with his playing partner Joe Ledwidge. In their first round game, Niall and Joe beat Gherardo Boffi and Stefan Forton from Italy and Romania respectively in straight sets 21-1, 21-12. In their second round game, they beat English pair James Babington and Stuart Illingworth 21-15, 22-20. In the quarter final the Irish pair managed to beat off the top seeds, Anders Buus Jensen and Carsten Loesch from Denmark 21-13, 17-21, 21-15.

Unfortunately, Niall and Joe were beaten in the semi-final 21-12, 25-23 by Anglo-Irish pairing Mark Topping and Nitin Panesar, but still took home a bronze medal.
