PEI supports relief efforts in Haiti

PEI is committed to supporting the many relief efforts for those affected by the appalling Earthquake in Haiti which occurred on the 12th January 2010. The devastation experienced by so many people in this region during and since the earthquake is immeasurable.

While there has been a significant worldwide relief effort to help those affected, it will take many years to rebuild the country, and a lot longer to bring normality back to lives of the Haitian people - some of the poorest in the western world.

While there have been many Irish initiatives to help, PEI was particularly impressed with the efforts of the Irish Orthopaedic Haiti Fund set up by Mr. David Moore, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Mr. Sean Dudeney, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Mr. Hannan Mullett, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Mr. Richard Hanson, Consultant Plastic Surgeon, as well as, Mr. Aaron Glynn and Mr. Mihai Vioreanu, both Senior Orthopaedic Registrars. Their well publicised mission, involved the chartering of a plane and filling this with relief workers, including several doctors, nurses and surgeons; and emergency supplies, including food and medical products.

In support of this, PEI was able to assemble 3 pallets of much needed medical supplies including:
•    10,000 Pairs of Surgical Gloves (Ansell)
•    30,000 Pieces of Examination Gloves (Ansell)
•    120 Bottles with pumps Sterillium Surgical Hand Disinfectant (Bode Chemie)

Also included were several orthopaedic trauma sets including:
•    SS SMALL FRAG (DePuy)
•    SS MINI FRAG (DePuy)
•    7MM SS (DePuy)
•    SUPERCONDYLAR NAIL KIT (DePuy)
•    Screws and Plate Implants (DePuy)
•    Nail Implants (DePuy)

This shipment left Ireland over the weekend of 13th February. It plans to send rotating teams over the coming months and years to treat those with injuries, deformities and disabilities resulting from the earthquake.
