Commitment to Achieving Net Zero

PEI Surgical Unlimited is committed to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050.

Our organisation is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and supporting the UK Government's Net Zero strategy. This Carbon Reduction Plan outlines our baseline emissions footprint and the measures we will implement to reduce emissions in line with the requirements of Procurement Policy Note 06/21.

Baseline Emissions Footprint

Baseline emissions are a record of the greenhouse gases that have been produced in the past. Baseline emissions provide the reference point against which emissions reduction can be measured.

It is important to note that while we are using the report from Environmental Efficiency in 2024 as our baseline, this was based on a report in 2020 from the same team with significant actions taken which have resulted in a reduction of our CO2 footprint. We completed the following between 2020 and 2024:

  1. Put on site chargers and moved to hybrid / EV fleet where possible.
  2. Since 2010 we have now got 46% of company cars as EV (18%) and hybrid (28%)
  3. Installed solar panels in main building providing 50% of max demand - per Irish law this is max number of solar panels we can have.
  4. Completed the motion sensor lighting project in the warehouse
  5. Monthly recording of company vehicle usage and water usage
  6. Provided driver training to improve efficiency
  7. Changed to source FSC printing paper, packaging and filling
  8. Warehouse heating - destratification fans
  9. Warehouse insulation
  10. Energy policy
  11. Planted trees in garden
  12. PEI also introduced a hybrid working policy

Additional Details Relating to the Baseline Emissions Calculations

The organisational boundary for this Carbon Reduction Plan includes all Irish operations under the operational control of PEI Surgical Unlimited, including office locations and company-owned vehicles. PEI Surgical has grown significantly over the past years. The colleague numbers at end of 2025 was 145 compared to 125 in 2024.

PEI Surgical commission Environmental Efficiency who have offices in Ireland and the UK (Birmingham) to enhance the sustainability of our operations. To this end, Environmental Efficiency was engaged to review site operations under the categories of Energy, Water, and Waste, providing recommendations to minimize impacts in these areas. A previous sustainability audit conducted by Environmental Efficiency in February 2020 offered several recommendations.

Additionally, Environmental Efficiency carried out an in-depth calculation of PEI's carbon footprint. This includes carbon emissions from PEI's own activities (Scope 1), purchased energy (Scope 2), and the direct emissions associated with the supply chain (Scope 3).

This procedure follows the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol developed by the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), which is widely recognized as the international standard for accounting and reporting greenhouse gas emissions.
